Description
Located ten minutes walking distance from downtown Langley (population 1050), the Highlands is a new mixed-use neighborhood with a variety of housing types from courtyard cottages, to single-family homes and live-work lofts. Construction began in the summer of 2007.
This is a larger neighborhood than many of our previous projects and is comprised of series of smaller neighborhood clusters each at a scale that fosters a sense of community among nearby neighbors.
Streets are considered “public rooms”, flanked by usable porches and active rooms of the houses rather than blank garage doors. Alleyways provide access to garages, utility services, and are part of an extensive pedestrian network that connects the neighborhood with the surrounding area.
More than 75 percent of the existing trees have been preserved and integrated into the plan, including a forest buffer and new city park.
Sitework and construction are following standards from the “Low Impact Development Technical Guidance Manual for Puget Sound” and “Built Green” program.
